A Bathroom Transformation That Changed a Life

At SBC Builders Ltd, we recently had the privilege of helping transform the daily life of a County Durham teenager living with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA Type 2). Working in partnership with Believe Housing, Durham County Council, and the NHS Foundation Trust, we carried out essential adaptations to make his home safer, more accessible, and more comfortable.

The existing bathroom had become unsuitable for Charlie following major spinal surgery. Our team was brought in to deliver a tailored solution that would meet both his current and long-term needs. The work involved relocating a boiler to maximise usable space, lowering the ceiling to retain warmth, and converting the bathroom into a fully accessible wet room.

We completed the project in under two weeks, taking care to minimise disruption and ensure the space worked perfectly for Charlie. His mother, Helen, shared how the changes have not only improved his daily routine but also boosted his confidence and mental wellbeing.

It was a pleasure to work on a project where the outcome makes such a meaningful difference. We’re proud to have played a part in helping Charlie regain a sense of dignity and independence at home.
